Customer Spotlight: Indy Steel Erectors

At Indy Steel Erectors, it’s not just about building structures – it’s about building teams, leaders, and culture that lasts.

Founded in 1980, Indy Steel Erectors began its life thanks to a trio of ironworkers with a vision for what a steel erection company could be. Today, it’s the second-oldest steel erection company in the greater Indianapolis area and continues a decades-long tradition of providing a family-oriented culture for ironworkers. With leadership retention currently averaging over 25 years, it’s a company that values long-term working relationships and a team that sticks together.

The three driving factors of Indy Steel Erectors are safety, quality, and production. The company consistently pushes for new innovation in construction techniques and in safety practices, ensuring an experience that is positive and safe for all parties involved. In addition to these innovative practices, Indy Steel Erectors carries out their projects with a unique approach. By retaining leaders long-term, owning their own cranes, and partnering with union iron workers and operating engineers (they employ approximately 60 union ironworkers from Indianapolis Local 22 and 5 crane operators from Indianapolis Local 103), the company is able to fulfill projects faster, more safely, and with expert craftsmanship every time.

Indy Steel Erectors has been certified for their efforts towards excellence. In March 2008, they became the second steel erector in Indiana (and the 120th in the country) to achieve AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) Certified Steel Erector status. Three years later, in April 2011, they became the first erector in Indiana accredited with the AISC Advanced Certified Steel Erector. In 2018, Indy Steel Erectors was certified under the new AISC standards with endorsements in seismic and metal decking. Their safety efforts have also resulted in a partnership with a national safety consultancy firm, developing personal fall arrest systems that eventually became available for public purchase.

Over the years, Indy Steel Erectors has worked on a wide variety of building projects, all within a 100-mile radius of Indianapolis. Their work has included commercial story buildings, hospitals and medical office buildings, schools of various sizes, warehouses, commercial retail, reinforcing and modifications of existing structures, and miscellaneous steel such as stairs, handrail and ladders. Some of their most notable projects include the Butler University Lacy School, the Comlux structure at the Indianapolis International Airport, the Community North Cancer Center, the IKEA in Fishers, the Merchants Bank headquarters, and the Convergence at Discovery Park on the campus of Purdue University.
